How do Leaves Affect Your Pool's Chemistry?

How do Leaves Affect Your Pool's Chemistry?
Posted in: Pool Chemistry , DIY

It’s that time of year – leaves are falling into the pool and it’s frustrating, right? Let The Pool Team help you manage this problem!

Let’s talk about why leaves might affect your pool chemistry. Some leaves are acidic which will lower your pool’s pH. When leaves are left in the pool they start to break down and release phosphorus which becomes a source of food for algae. Eventually, if left unattended, all the leaves will sink to the bottom of the pool and form a heavy pile. The longer the leaves are left on the bottom of your pool, the more algae will grow and this eventually leads to staining on the pool floor.

So how can this be managed? Let’s have a look at the solutions.

Firstly, you would need to remove all the leaves from your pool. This can be done by using a leaf catcher such as the PoolSkim or the Pool Gobbler Pro. These leaf catchers attach to the pool’s Aimflow. You can also use a manual leaf skimmer to skim the excess leaves from the surfaces.

Leaves also get caught in the baskets in the weir and the pump so don’t forget that these need to be cleared out as part of a regular pool maintenance routine.

If your pool is green or has algae after all the leaves have been removed, it’s time to get your pool back in shape! Algae in a pool can be treated with the use of Aqua Pro Algaecide, Oxidiser, and Clarifier. This is known as The Pool Team’s Three Step Process (based on a 50 000 litre pool):

  1. Always remember to get the basics right first: Test the water; clean out the weir and pump baskets; backwash and rinse. This is to ensure that you obtain the best results from the products added. Learn more here.
  2. With the pool system on bypass/circulate, through the weir, add 2 litres Aqua Pro Algaecide, followed by 750 grams Aqua Pro Oxidiser.
  3. After the oxidizer has been added, the pool may become cloudy. Run the filter for 12 hours.
  4. Add 2 litres Aqua Pro Clarifier through the weir for a crystal-clear pool. Learn more here.

For the best results, ensure that your pH and Total Alkalinity are in balance.
