As winter sets in and temperatures start to drop, it is common to neglect the swimming pool. However, this is the time to prepare the pool for winter and keep up a regular pool maintenance routine in order to keep the pool in tip top shape for swimming season. Follow these handy tips to get you started.
Step 1: Clean the pool
Brush the walls and floor of the pool to get rid of any algae. In addition, The Pool Team recommends using a leaf skimmer to remove all the leaves and debris that float on the surface of the water. Shop leaf skimmers here.
Step 2: Test the water
If the pH and Total Alkalinity levels aren’t in balance, this could have an effect on the efficacy of the chlorine, as well as cause damage to the pool surfaces and fittings. pH and Total Alkalinity can be affected by weather changes, rain water etc. It is essential to test the water regularly and adjust as necessary. Step 3: Shock the pool
The Pool Team recommends shocking the pool before closing it for winter. This involves the use of Aqua Pro Algaecide, Oxidiser, and Clarifier. This is known as The Pool Team’s Three Step Process. This will assist in keeping the water clear during the colder months. Remember to run the filter for 24 hours after adding the chemicals to ensure that they are evenly distributed. Watch these videos to learn how to add Aqua Pro Oxidiser and how to administer the Three Step Process.
Step 4: Maintain and protect the pipes, pumps and other pool fittings
Ensure the pool pump and all plumbing lines leading to and from the pool are clear. Once all is clean and ready to go into hibernation, it’s a good idea to store all the pool equipment in a secure shed or storage box. Remember to store the pool cleaner hoses straight as opposed to rolled up in order to avoid coiling.
A secure storage solution protects the equipment from extreme weather and increases the lifespan of the pool equipment. This includes the weir, baskets and accessories. The Pool Team also recommends adding a pump box to keep the pool pump and filter protected from the elements. Shop here for pump housings.
Pro Tip
Avoid storing chemicals in the pump box as this can lead to potentially hazardous chemical reactions. Learn more here on how to correctly store pool chemicals.
Step 5: Cover the pool
In the event of rain or heavy winds, it is a good idea to use a pool cover to prevent rainwater, leaves and debris from entering the pool and affecting the water chemistry. The Pool Team recommends opening the pool cover once a week to allow chloramines to escape in order to maintain the water chemistry. Learn more here on the best pool covers for winter.
