How to Treat Pool Water Correctly

How to Treat Pool Water Correctly

When it comes to maintaining a swimming pool and treating the water, there are certain factors that need to be taken into account.

Below are our top tips on how to treat pool water correctly.

Know the volume of the pool

Before adding any chemicals to the pool, the most important thing to take into consideration is the volume of the pool. Knowing the volume of the pool will enable you to determine the correct dosage of the chemicals being added. The wrong chemical dosage could potentially make the water unsafe to swim in.

The volume of the pool is measured in litres. The calculation to determine the volume of the pool is as follows:

Rectangle pools:  Length X Breadth X Average Depth X 1000.

Round pools: Diameter X Diameter X Average Depth X 785

Marbelite or Fiberglass?

Do you know if the pool surface is marbelite or fibreglass? This is an important fact to know as certain ideal chemical levels such Total Alkalinity differ for each surface. The recommended Total Alkalinity in a marbelite pool is 80-120ppm, whereas the recommended Total Alkalinity in a fibreglass pool is 120-150ppm. A high pH can cause etching and scaling of marbelite or staining of Fibreglass. This leads us to our next tip on Balancing the water.

Balance the water

A vital step to treating pool water is to make sure the water is balanced before adding any additional chemicals. This entails testing the pH, Total Alkalinity, Free Chlorine, and Stabiliser levels. These tests can easily be done at home with the use of the Aqua Pro Test strips. Alternatively, The Pool Team offers free water analysis at all our stores, so bring in a water sample and receive professional advice on how to keep these levels in check.

Balancing of the pool’s water ensures the most benefit out of the chemicals added. For example, if the stabiliser level is too high, this will make the chlorine and other chemicals less effective.

Backwash and rinse

It is important to backwash and rinse before adding any chemicals to the water. The process of backwashing and rinsing removes organic matter from the filter that consumes chemicals. We recommend backwashing the pool on a weekly basis. Learn here how to backwash and rinse.
