Total Dissolved Solids

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a combination of all the dissolved chemicals and substances in the pool water. The recommended level of TDS in the pool is 1000 ppm. However, this may vary according to the type of pool.

When the TDS in the pool is too high, this can cause corrosion and stains on the surfaces. High TDS can also make the chlorine less effective which could result in cloudy water and algae growth.

In order to reduce TDS, the pool water level needs to be lowered and then replenished with fresh water. This will dilute the pool water, slowly bringing the TDS back into the ideal range.

The easiest way to lower the water level is by doing an extended backwash and rinse. Backwashing removes the water from the pool, reducing the water level, allowing for fresh water to be added. An extended backwash is done for approximately 5 minutes at a time. Do not drop the water level below the weir as this can cause damage to the pool pump. An extended backwash and rinse should be done daily for the first week, remembering to add fresh water after each backwash and rinse. After completing this process, take a sample of the water to one of The Pool Team stores to be tested. If the TDS level is not yet within the ideal range, then the process would need to be repeated. If the TDS level is now within the ideal range, then continue with your normal pool maintenance routine.

Head on down to any of The Pool Team stores for your complimentary water analysis which includes checking your Total Dissolved Solids.
