How to Shock your pool

Shocking your pool refers to the process of increasing the sanitation of the pool water. The purpose of shocking the pool is to raise the free chlorine levels in the water. Aqua Pro Oxidiser is a powerful shock treatment that assists with killing algae and bacteria, keeping the water free of contaminants and safe to swim in.

Before we talk about when to shock your pool, it is important to understand more about chlorine. There are two types of chlorine: Free chlorine and Total Chlorine. Free chlorine is the amount of chlorine that has not yet combined with contaminants which means that it is still available to sanitise the pool water. The ideal range of Free Chlorine is 2-3 parts per million (ppm). Total Chlorine is a combination of free chlorine and chlorine that has already combined with contaminants.

Essentially, the purpose of shocking a pool is to raise the free chlorine level to keep the pool water sanitised. So, when is it necessary to shock a pool?

When to shock your pool

Firstly, it is best to shock the pool in the evening to protect the chemicals from being consumed by the harsh sun. Another reason to shock the pool in the evening is to prevent bathers from entering the pool straight after it has been shocked. Aqua Pro Oxidiser is a powerful sanitiser that may cause eye and skin irritation. It is recommended to wait approximately 12 hours before swimming after Aqua Pro Oxidiser has been added to the pool.

The pool should be shocked on the following occasions:

  • When opening the pool for the start of the swimming season,
  • After heavy rains,
  • After a high bather load,
  • When there is a strong smell of chlorine (This is due to chloramines which is dead chlorine in the pool water. This is an indicator that there is not enough free chlorine in the water),
  • When closing the pool for winter (Remember to only cover the pool the next day to give the chemicals a chance to work before being trapped under the cover).

  1. Always remember to get the basics right first: Test the water; clean out the weir and pump baskets; backwash and rinse. This is to ensure that you obtain the best results from the products added.
  2. With the pool system on bypass/circulate, add the Aqua Pro Oxidiser through the weir, followed by the Aqua Pro Algaecide. SHOP AQUA PRO OXIDISER NOW
