Different Types of Pool Covers
Posted in: Pool Equipment , DIY

When choosing a pool cover, there are many things to take into consideration. In this article, we will be discussing when and why to use a pool cover, the different types of pool covers, and which pool cover is best for your swimming pool.

Advantages of a pool cover

  • Assists with retaining heat.
  • Reduces evaporation.
  • Protects chemicals from the harsh sun.
  • Prevents leaves and debris from falling into the pool.
  • Specific pool covers can be used for child and pet safety.
  • Pool covers help reduce the filter running time as well as chemical and water usage, making your pool more cost effective.

When to use a pool cover

There are many reasons why a pool cover may be useful. If your pool is exposed to direct sunlight, this can cause evaporation as well as a more rapid consumption of the chlorine in the pool. Thus, it is recommended to use a pool cover to protect the pool from the sun’s rays. A pool cover is also useful if your pool is situated beneath trees as this would reduce and prevent the build-up of leaves and debris in the pool. One might also want to cover the pool at night in order to retain the heat.

The best pool cover for you

When it comes to choosing a pool cover, there are a number of things to take into consideration, such as the amount of space you have, the shape of the pool and exposure to the sun. The Pool Team offers four different pool covers to choose from:

  • Leaf net covers are made from PVC mesh and are used to prevent leaves and debris from falling into the pool.
  • Solar/bubble blankets protect the pool water from evaporation as well as retain the heat. There are two solar blanket options to choose from – the 400 micron and the 500 micron. The Pool Team recommends using the 500 micron in order to retain the most heat.
  • Solid covers reduce evaporation and prevent leaves and debris from falling into the pool.
  • Safety nets are used for child and pet safety. These nets are made from nylon and have a floater attached in order to keep them from sinking. Child and pet safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to swimming pools. The Pool Team recommends having safety nets installed by a professional to ensure the safety standards are met.
