Keeping the fun alive; pool safety tips and tricks

Long days spent outside in the sun, around a braai or in the swimming pool, are common in sunny South Africa. While the pool is a great way to keep the children entertained, one should not overlook these simple safety tips and tricks to keep the whole family happy and safe.

  1. Ensure there is always a designated parent on watch when there are children in the pool. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye but by taking turns to supervise the fun, these accidents can be avoided.
  2. If parents are not present, ensure that all caregivers are able to swim, trained in basic CPR, and have completed a registered first-aid course.
  3. Children follow in their parents’ footsteps so ensure that you are a good swimming role model when you are in the pool. Think responsibility and act in a way that influences a positive relationship with the pool and water.
  4. Keep your pool topped up. It may not seem important but keeping your pool levels up, makes it easier for small arms and hands to grasp the edge of the pool when needed.
  5. On hot days always ensure that you encourage not only the children, but the adults, to keep hydrated. Heatstroke can occur when you least expect it and even if you do not feel thirsty, your body may be craving a cold glass of water.

Always remain responsible around the swimming pool area. As an adult, you may want to sit back enjoy a few cold beers and relax, but when children are involved, a fun day can turn into a disaster in an instinct. Never take for granted that your children or their friends can swim, always remain vigilant and aware.
