The Effectiveness of Pool Chemicals in Summer Versus Winter

The Effectiveness of Pool Chemicals in Summer Versus Winter

Does the time of year and the change of seasons have an effect on pool chemicals? Let’s dive into the difference between summer and winter.

Summer Versus Winter

You may be wondering if there is an effect on your pool chemicals in summer versus winter. The answer? Pool chemicals will work as efficiently in both summer and winter. However, the difference is in the way they should be stored and the amount that should be used. Heat and sunlight can make pool chemicals less effective. It is for this reason that in summer, it is best to store chemicals in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight in order to get the most benefit out of them and to avoid potentially harmful chemical reactions. It is also recommended to increase your chemical usage in summer as the heat and a higher bather load results in chemicals being consumed quicker than they would be in winter.

However, in winter, depending on the geographical region, temperatures can drop drastically and certain chemicals need to be stored in slightly warmer areas, though still away from direct sunlight. An example of this is Aqua Pro Algaecide. Algaecide tends to thicken in colder weather. This would give the product a gel-like consistency, making it harder to use. It is recommended to store Aqua Pro Algaecide in a warmer area in winter in order to gain the most benefit from the product. The Pool Team recommends using non-stabilised granular chlorine in winter, such as the Aqua Pro granular chlorine, rather than a chlorine floater. Due to the colder water in winter, it is harder for a chlorine floater to evenly distribute the chlorine around the entire pool whereas granular chlorine can be evenly distributed far easier.

Pro Tip

Keeping up with weekly maintenance is recommended regardless of the season! This will ensure the pool is sparkling blue and sanitised all year round and ready for swimming season without any additional treatment!

Be sure to store all chemicals on the same level and not on top of each other in order to avoid spillage over other chemicals. Chemical spillage can not only be harmful to one’s skin, but if chemicals are spilled over each other this can cause a hazardous chemical reaction. NEVER store chemicals in the pump box! Moisture and heat can cause an explosion.
