The Flow of Water Around a Pool

The Flow of Water Around a Pool

Have you ever wondered how the pool system works to effectively circulate the water around the pool? Water circulation is important for the even distribution of chemicals as well as to ensure that the pool cleaner is working to its full potential. This allows for the pool to be clean and sanitised, preventing the growth of algae and other harmful bacteria. In order to ensure the water is sufficiently circulated, the general rule of thumb is to turn over the entire volume of water once in winter and twice in summer. Read this article to learn more about pump running times.

Have a look at the diagram below to demonstrate the flow of water around a swimming pool.

The water flows through the pool system as follows:

  • From the weir
  • Through the suction line
  • To the pump
  • Through the filter
  • Through the heat pump or solar panels
  • Through the chlorinator
  • Through the return line
  • Back into the pool via the aimflow
