Your pool is a huge investment, are you maintaining it properly?

Your pool is a huge investment, are you maintaining it properly?

You’ve spent tens of thousands of Rands on creating your dream swimming pool – are you treating it correctly to ensure it lasts?

Did you know that the incorrect mix of chemicals can ruin your pool? What it can cause is the deterioration of your pool walls, peeling of the paint on the pool walls and floors and even causing deterioration of internal metal structures.

Your concrete swimming pool should last you about 10 years before it needs to be resurfaced, pools with vinyl liners can last between 5 and 10 years and a fibreglass should last approximately 25 years. If you want to keep your pool in perfect swimming condition for as many years as possible, you’ll need to know what you should and shouldn’t do to preserve it over the years.

SHOCK YOUR POOL CORRECTLY

It’s common practice to shock your swimming pool to improve the water condition but often the shock chemicals are added directly to the pool. This is incorrect. When shocking your pool you should mix the chemicals in a bucket before adding them to the skimmer. This prevents the chemicals from eroding the pool lining and causing leaks.

In addition, you should shock your pool at night when the sun’s UV rays won’t affect the chlorine and make it dissolve quicker than it can eradicate dirt and bacteria.

BRUSH REGULARLY

Brushing your pool walls regularly not only ensures that you get all the algae off but also the remaining chemicals. Chlorine and shock treatments can remain on your pool walls longer than they should which can cause corrosion, staining, peeling and leaking.

TEST YOUR POOL WATER

Balancing your pool’s pH and alkalinity is extremely important. Acidic pool water may seem like it’s killing the foreign organisms in your pool but in reality, it’s also destroying your pool pump, pool lining and pool filtration system.

SHOWER BEFORE TAKING A DIP

Most people are eager to hit the pool as soon as possible on a warm day. Make sure to shower before you do, because sunscreen creams, lotions and hair gels can really affect your pool. These foreign substances require more chemicals to clean your pool which can stain the walls and affect its lifespan.

These simple tips can help you extend the lifespan of your pool drastically, so implement them for years of uninterrupted swimming fun. If you have any more questions about best practices for maintaining your swimming pool, contact The Pool Team to talk to an expert.
