Understanding the Weir

Weirs are an essential part of the swimming pool system. The weir draws water from the pool and sends it through to the pump and filter. This assists in removing contaminants such as leaves and debris in order to maintain the sanitation of the water.

Without a weir, the filter would take strain and therefore not run efficiently. This can damage the filter as well as cause cloudy water and algae growth.

Let’s have a look at the anatomy of the weir.

How To Maintain the weir

Cleaning out the weir ensures it works efficiently and will prevent unnecessary damage to the pool’s filtration system. A blocked weir basket not only affects the efficacy of the pool cleaner, but will also require the pump to work harder to circulate the water which ultimately decreases the lifespan of the pump. The weir basket should be emptied at least once a week to keep your pool clean and your filter running efficiently. Make sure to regularly check the basket and vac lid for cracks and replace them if necessary.

Maintaining the weir is simple to do by following these steps:

  1. Turn off the pool pump.
  2. Remove the deck lid.
  3. Unplug the pool cleaner.
  4. Remove the vac lid, take out the weir basket and empty out the leaves and debris.
  5. Return the basket back into the weir.
  6. Return the vac lid and plug in the pool cleaner.
  7. Replace the deck lid and turn the pool system back on.

Replacing parts

The Pool Team stocks a variety of weirs in different sizes and colours. Certain weir parts are easily replaceable by yourself. These parts include:

  • The deck lidThis covers the top opening of the weir. This is where one can access the vac lid and basket.
  • The basket - The basket collects the leaves and debris before reaching the pump. The basket needs to be cleared out regularly to avoid blocking the water flow to the pump.
  • The vac lid - The vacuum lid, commonly known as the vac lid, sits at the base of the weir opening, just above the basket. There are various size vac lids available. If the incorrect size vacuum lid is used, this could cause damage to the pool system as well as inhibit the pool cleaner from running efficiently.
  • The vacuum cuffthis part secures the pool cleaner hose and regulator valve in place.
  • The weir flapthe weir flap is used when there is no pool cleaner plugged into the weir. This part acts as a one way valve, preventing the leaves and debris from re-entering the pool once they have been caught in the weir.
